Activity

Storytelling is great fun and all you need is an imagination. You can tell your stories, draw them or write them down, but really anyone can have a go. So why not try some of these ideas?

SAY IT WITH FRIENDS!

With a group of friends why not try each saying the line of story, you could start with a story you already know and once you get the hang of it just make up a new story as you go. If you get really good you can try only saying one word each. Don’t forget to put in funny characters and daring adventures for them to complete.

STORY MAPS

Sometimes it can be very difficult to remember stories, they are filled with so many characters, places, objects and so many things happen in them. So here is a useful way to help you remember your story. Every story takes you on a journey, and the best method to find your way on a journey is to use a map, or in this case a story map. Take a sheet of paper, and draw, write, or cut out and stick pictures on, to lay out the journey your story takes. Put on the place where you start, the characters there, and then draw a path to the next place, or the time when you meet more characters, or when something important happens. Story maps are great fun to make, and even just making one helps the story stick in your head, ready for the next time you tell it, you can even use them when you are telling your story so your listeners see the journey as well as listen to it.

A PICTURE TELLS A THOUSAND STORIES!

Pick a favourite picture, poem, song or lyric and use this as a starting point to create a story based around it. For instance is there someone or something which can become your main character, or villain? Does your picture, poem, song or lyric happen in a particular place or time which might be good for your story? Is there an object which might help, or hinder the characters?

MISSING WORDS

"Below is a story with lots of missing bits, have a go at filling in the spaces and see how your story turns out, you can do it lots of times and get lots of different stories."

Once upon a time the lands lived in fear because of the evil _______________ called _______________, who lived in the ________________________. The nearby villagers were terrified of the evil _______________ and life was filled with having to do lots of jobs for the evil _______________ such like ________________________ and even worst still ____________________.
What they needed was someone to stand up to _______________, but no one was brave enough until one day while working in _______________ doing _______________, an otherwise unnoticeable soul named _______________ had had enough! It was time to do something, and that is what best-friends are really good at, so calling up _______________, they set about making plans.
Sat in _______________’s room they looked around for things to help them on their quest. There was a _______________ but it was too heavy to carry, then they saw a _______________ but as fun as it was it would not be much use against the evil _______________. Finally they packed a bag with ___________, __________, _______________, a _______________, and finally some strawberry jam and marmite sandwiches in case they got hungry. Looking around one last time they left the village and began their journey to ________________________.
Soon the bitter winds began to howl and the trees creaked loudly around them, a wolf cried in the distant but it was not distant enough for our brave heroes liking. The snow fell not gently as it so often does, but sped into their faces stinging and biting. _______________ was being to wish that they had bought with them the _______________, and _______________ was just wishing they stayed at home. At that very moment all other thoughts disappeared as through the blizzard they could suddenly see _______________ all around them, staring at them. Soon it was not only the cold freezing them to the spot, but fear as well. They opened the bag and desperately fumbled for something which could save them, grabbing hold of something, _______________ pulled it from the bag and waved it around at the surrounding _______________. However what had been pulled from the bag was a _______________, oh dear things were going from bad to worst! But all around them they heard laughter, the surrounding _______________ had found it so funny that they could not stop laughing, in fact their sides began it split! Everything they had eaten last night for tea, like _______________ and _______________, spilled out on to the floor. Our brave heroes, _______________ and _______________, quickly carried on their journey before anyone saw they were gone.
However, the evil _______________ sees everything and knew that they were coming closer, but no threat was too great. Letting fourth a terrible shout, _______________ decided to meet the two foolish heroes, and set off to _______________ which is known as being the most dangerous place in the land, because of ________________________. This would be a fitting end for anyone as stupid as these two.
As the two left the trees behind they saw a terrible dark figure waiting ahead of them. They looked around and knew they were at _______________, and this was the evil _______________ waiting for them. _______________ started to wish that mum was there with a nice mug of coco and a chocolate biscuit, but when your tummy gets so jumbley a biscuit really does not seem so nice.
An evil smile spread across _______________’s face, but _______________ shouted ‘We’re not scared of you, you’re just a bully!’. _______________ was still too busy thinking about the chocolate biscuit, when suddenly the evil _______________ jumped forward and growled in their faces. A foul breath surged fourth and bits of breakfast landed on our heroes. EEEEEEEEK! They were about to turn and run, when something very strange happened. It started in their boots and went up their legs to their knees, into their bellies, up their backs and into their heads. A feeling of bravery filled them and was worn on their faces deeper than their skin, with heroism burning in their eyes they pulled out from the bag _______________ and drew their _______________.
The evil _______________ was stunned, no one had ever tried to challenge _______________ and now these two were going to try and defeat their enemy with _______________ in their hands. The heroes quickly set to work, and defend as the evil _______________ might the heroes were too quick. The battle raged and each side took its turn at looking likely to be victorious. Yet with one quick movement _______________ fell to the floor and _______________ stood over the vanquished. Life would never be the same again, the triumphant _______________ imprisoned the now sobbing _______________ forever, and later went home for a champion's tea of ____________________________________________________________.
